With a school that dates this far back it's one of just five historically black high schools left from the days of segregation the others are Carver High and Atkins High in Winston-Salem, West Charlotte, and E. Smith in Fayetteville , no one's quite sure -- without heavier research being involved than time now allows us -- if another Hillside team has won this many games by this point in the season.

That would be a big deal at a program like Hillside's. Because although several other Triangle schools have great players to boast of as does Hillside: Rodney Rogers and John Lucas to name two they schools can't match the record-breaking, title-achieving, superhero-like iconic nature of a team like the Hornets' last title team in High School Athletic Conference -- the state association for black schools during segregation -- was also the last time Hillside won it all.

We have great leadership here. For Lee-Worthy, a graduate himself, nothing would be a sweeter end to a season than adding another state title. Lee-Worthy was part of the last graduating class to come through Hillside when it was still at the school's old stomping grounds at Concord Street, before the property was sold and is now part of the N. Central campus. He grew up watching players that mean a lot to the Hillside community that might not ring a bell with an outsider's memory, players like Larry "Gene" Johnson and Andre McCollum.

And of course, he heard stories about the Pony Express, the team whose history he hopes this year's group can match.
